Registries

Some registries do not require documentation and/or DNA profiling to register a dog or its offspring as purebred.  Registration is typically done to compete in shows or trials, record and protect bloodlines, for the ability to state you own a registered dog, and/or to sell dogs for a better price.

American Kennel Club (AKC)

- largest and most well known registry, AKC holds the most events focusing primarily on show conformation.  It is, however, noteworthy that AKC orignally refused to recongize the Australian Shepherd as a breed.  It was only after ASCA was formed and a demand was realized for this breed that the Australian Shepherd became a recognized AKC breed
